Founders’ Friday (October 2021) – Event Recap

Since July 2018, we’ve been running our Founders’ Friday events every month as a way for self-employed freelancers, startup founders, micro business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs & students to hear about the latest opportunities to start or grow a business in the North East of England.

(It’s also a great way for business advisers, professional services companies, software providers, funders, investors & public sector officials to get closer to startups & small business owners in the region).

Since COVID came along, we’ve been running Founders’ Friday online inside our private Facebook Group. To see the talks & presentations before anyone else, give a talk at any of our future events & be promoted through all our digital channels plus get free access to all our future in-person events, join our Community (just £75 for an individual ‘Lifetime Membership’).

Here are some of the talks & presentations from our latest event on 29th October:

In this video, Paul Lancaster talks about the ‘Flamingo Heights‘ podcasting studio, training & events space that Ashleigh King has just opened in Newcastle, this month’s Founders’ Friday talks (below) & his new role as a Senior Consultant – IT / Tech for Nigel Wright Recruitment!

Zaid Hisham is a US designer who helps entrepreneurial men re-design their businesses to gain more independence, income & time, do more of what they love & create new possibilities for themselves & their families. If you’d like to see how he can help you, connect on LinkedIn at & / or book a 90 min Zoom call at

In this video, Julian Plumley explains how Endoxa Learning helps pupils / students improve their argumentation, analysis & evaluation skills, while simultaneously learning subject knowledge. This means that teachers do not need to worry about sacrificing lesson time to teach critical thinking, which would be necessary for traditional critical thinking courses.

In this video, Tony Robinson OBE & Paul Lancaster talk about all things enterprise, fulfilment, happiness, Stoicism, resilience, Charles Dickens, Leonard Cohen & the tough decisions we all have to make in order to keep going. Buy your copy of Tony’s brilliant book ‘The Happipreneur: Why #MicroBizmatters’ from his website at & all royalties will go towards the ExcludedUK ‘Business Boost Fund‘ that has been set up to provide small grants to the 3 million freelancers & micro business owners that have been excluded from the UK Government’s COVID-19 financial support schemes!

Want to speak at Founders’ Friday?

We’re always looking for speakers to give a Show & Tell about their business / organisation, take part in a Q&A interview or deliver a Masterclass on a topic that startups or small businesses would find interesting & useful.

How we do this:

  • Speakers send us pre-recorded videos of their talk / presentation / interview which are initially just shared inside our private Facebook Group for Members of our Startup Week Community to see first.
  • The videos are then uploaded to our Newcastle Startup Week YouTube Channel & embedded into a handy ‘Event Recap’ blog (like the ones you can see here)
  • The blog & videos are then shared across all our social media accounts (30,000+ followers) & featured in our email newsletter the following week (just under 3,000 subscribers) so it’s a great way to raise your profile, amplify your reach & promote what you do to our audience!

If you’d like to speak at one of our Founders’ Friday events, you need to join our Startup Week Community first (which is just £75 for an individual ‘Lifetime Membership’) & then email to say you’d like to submit a video.

(Businesses / organisations also have the option of getting ‘Group Membership’ at the reduced price of just £60 per person if they buy 5 or more (i.e. £300). This not only gives them access to our private Facebook Group & the opportunity to speak at Founders’ Friday but also the ability to self-publish blogs / articles on our website whenever they like. If you’re interested in this option, please email me at

Whether you join or not, you might also like to Follow us on Twitter @FoundersFriday & Subscribe to our YouTube Channel to see all our future videos as soon as they go up.
