Startup Spotlight: Solution Sense

Over 600 people attended our first Newcastle Startup Week festival in 2017 and so we’d like to shine a light on some of them, starting with Mark Nicholson (Managing Director, Solution Sense).

Mark Nicholson (Solution Sense)

Hi Mark, please tell us who you are and what your business does?

I am Mark Nicholson, a 28 year old, born and bred in the North East of England. My company (Solution Sense) was created with the goal of helping business become more efficient and more effective to make them more profitable which will help them expand and grow into bigger companies, thus being able to hire more employees which will in turn reduce unemployment, especially in the North East region.

The way we can help businesses is split into two methods:

The first method is we supply companies with an all-in-one sales, marketing and management platform where they can manage almost their entire business from one login, anywhere in the world on a cloud-based platform. Being fully integrated secures client information by reducing API’s and means there is no need for duplicated information across multiple platforms.

The second method of how we can help companies is with our expert team of people who specialise in website development, SEO, social media marketing, PPC management, content writing as well as business coaching. We can obviously combine method one and two so the business is getting the most effective solutions and support possible.

We can support almost any business, in any sector with the sole objective of taking them from where they are now, to where they really want to be. That’s our goal, that’s our mission.

How long has your business been going?

Solution Sense has only been operating since November 2017, so I’m currently coming up to my fourth month of business. However, so far I am very happy with the progress we are making personally and the progress the businesses we are working with are making.

What were you doing before this and what was your motivation for starting a business?

I was a student at Northumbria University studying Entrepreneurial Business Management but I have also owned an online retail store and professional car detailing company. My motivation to start this company was my overall passion of helping people achieve success in their own adventures. Throughout my life I have always felt great rewards in supporting and encouraging other to chase after their dreams and goals. I have this exact same passion with business, the legacy I want to leave behind is for Solution Sense to be known as the company that really supported and took companies from small organisations, into multi-national enterprises through the use of our platform and expert business services.

What did you like best about Newcastle Startup Week 2017? What did you learn?

Attending Newcastle Startup Week in 2017 was a brilliant experience and something that is appropriate for all businesses owners no matter what stage of their development they are in. As business involves constant change and adapting to the economy and industry trends, Newcastle Startup Week was filled with excellent advice from such a wide range of industry professionals that the content was relevant to everyone.

I personally learned so much from this event, such as employment advice, tech industry trends, financial advice, the motivation to be resilient and to never stop pushing for your dreams. Although the event itself was excellent, so was the opportunity to network with hundreds of other professionals throughout the day and at the evening events too. The fact that the event is held at different venues keeps the atmosphere buzzing and allows people an opportunity to see the beautiful city of Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Why should other people attend Newcastle Startup Week on 14-18 May?

It’s quite simple really. If you are serious about business, no matter what industry, no matter what level of expertise you have, you are guaranteed to learn something new and meet some amazing people from being a part of this brilliant opportunity.

What tips or advice would you give to anyone starting out?

The main tips I can give:

  • I would really recommend people start a business with at least one other business partner, because a business requires so much work and so much knowledge in different areas, that it is so hard to gain traction on your own.
  • At first, although time is precious and you may feel like there are not enough hours in the day, I would still recommend you push yourself out of your comfort zone and try to do the areas you would normally just get someone else to do. This will give you an insight into what it takes to be affective within that area and will also allow you to set appropriate goals for whoever you hire to manage that in the future.
