Be inspired by Steve Mayes’ Lego Landmarks of the North East at Newcastle Startup Week!

Day 1 of Newcastle Startup Week (aka ‘Inspiration Day‘) is all about celebrating the North East of England’s local success stories of the past, present and future – reminding people of our rich history of world-class innovations and inventions and showing how Newcastle upon Tyne continues to be the original ‘test bed city’!

Taking place in Robert Stephenson & Co’s iconic BOILER SHOP venue (the world’s first purpose built locomotive factory) we’re deliberately not providing ‘exhibition space’ because we want all the focus to be on our speakers and don’t want to waste the time of the exhibitors who might be hoping for lots of visitors to their stand.

However, we are inviting a small number of exciting local innovators and creators into the space to enhance the experience for our visitors and are delighted to announce that Steve Mayes (BRICK THIS Lego Architecture) will have some of his incredible models of North East landmarks on display, fresh from his current exhibition at The Centre for Life!

Steve says: “Being able to say that I’m a Lego Architect still amazes me! Lego was my childhood toy, but it was only 4 years ago that I picked it up again and started recreating iconic architecture with it. And again it was the North East that was my inspiration. I say again, because when I first moved to the North East in 2000 the amazing architecture of Newcastle and Gateshead in particular inspired me to take up photography, and I’ve been a professional architectural photographer for over 10 years now. But the familiar landmarks of the Angel of the North, the BALTIC, St James’ Park and more keep on giving, except now my medium is those little plastic bricks! I’m excited to be part of Newcastle Startup Week on ‘Inspiration Day’ because I feel this city is integral to who I am. And if you’re lucky enough to feel the spark of inspiration, go with it – you never know what can be achieved!”
